Safe, Secure and Successful

Oastlers Design Technology Department

Design Technology

Design and Technology Resistant Materials involves working with Woods, Metals and Plastics.

Learners are taught not only to design and make products following specific design briefs – but also to be critical of existing designs.

Learners will progress on to writing their own design briefs, and finding ‘Needs’ for new products, as their skills develop.

Design Technology (Resistant Materials) at Oastlers is housed in a purpose built classroom, which contains both a fully equipped workshop and a planning/design area.

At Key Stage 3 the learners will carry out short design and make projects involving the use of wood, metals and plastics.

At Key Stage, our current Year 11 learners are working towards a GCSE following the WJEC Specification and will be required to produce a piece of controlled assessment coursework (made item plus full design folio) along with sitting a written exam paper.

Our Y10 and future KS4 learners will be working towards  AQA Level 1 & Level 2 Technical Award - Materials Technology.  They will learn how to make a range of high quality prototypes, samples and products using woods, metals and polymers applying technical and practical knowledge to ensure that the product is fit for purpose.  They will get to learn both traditional skills and use modern technologies.

There will be two internally-assessed units, and a third unit that is externally assessed.
